It is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the tallest peak in Africa, is a majestic and iconic landmark that beckons adventure from around the globe. Standing at an awe-inspiring 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), Kilimanjaro is not only a natural wonder but also a bucket-list destination for trekkers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts.
Kilimanjaro is a stratovolcano composed of three distinct volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Each of these cones offers a unique landscape and geological history, making Kilimanjaro a fascinating destination for exploration.
Climbing Kilimanjaro is like trekking through multiple continents in just a few days. The mountain’s ecological zones change dramatically with altitude, providing trekkers with a diverse range of environments to experience.
Mount Kilimanjaro offers several routes to the summit, each with its own unique characteristics, challenges, and scenic beauty:
The “Whiskey Route”, popular for its diverse and scenic trails.
Mount Kilimanjaro is not only the highest peak in Africa, but it is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, coming in at an awe-inspiring 5,895 meters. The climb offers so much more than physical challenge, with the snow-capped summit and varied landscapes delivering the stunning views that have made this mountain a dream destination for adventure seekers for decades.
That’s what makes our [INTERNAL LINK: Kilimanjaro Group Tours] so unforgettable. It is the varied terrain and peaceful remoteness, coupled with the personal sense of accomplishment, that you will feel as you reach ever closer to the summit. It is the local guide who knows the route to the summit by heart, leading you through open moorland and alpine desert before you reach the glacier-lined crater of Uhuru Peak.
Mount Kilimanjaro isn’t like a technical climb. In fact, our Kilimanjaro tours are accessible to most healthy travellers who thirst for adventure and are willing to put in a little prep time to get climb-ready.
Walk under the stars, rise with the sun, and climb to the Roof of Africa with a team of experienced local guides by your side. Discover the wonder of Kilimanjaro in the most authentic and rewarding way possible: by climbing it.
A successful Kilimanjaro trek begins long before your boots hit the trail. You are going to want to choose the best guided Kilimanjaro climb for your experience level. This will help you to prepare your body and mind for the altitude and the climb.
Acclimatisation is the secret ingredient to a safe and enjoyable climb. Less experienced adventurers should choose a route with a more gradual elevation gain and allow them the time to “climb high, sleep low.” This helps the body adjust more easily to higher altitudes. You should remember that proper nutrition and staying hydrated are as important as slow, steady pacing when climbing.
We recommend booking your trek at least 3 to 6 months in advance. This will give you enough time for training and working out all the logistics. The average Kilimanjaro climb takes 6 to 9 days, depending on the route. A longer itinerary (more days) allows you to acclimate better and will help increase your chances of reaching the summit.
When you book Kilimanjaro climb tours with Mauly, we provide the support and guidance you need at every stage. We help you out with fitness tips and packing lists, as well as on-the-ground care during your trek. Mauly helps you to focus on the adventure, while we handle the logistics.
Part of Kilimanjaro’s appeal is that there’s no single path to the summit. When you choose one of our climb Mount Kilimanjaro tours, you’ll be able to pick from different unique routes that each offer different views, difficulty levels, and experiences. Each route offers something different, but all Kilimanjaro Trekking Tours lead to the same breathtaking destination: the summit of Africa.
The “Coca-Cola Route” is the only route with hut accommodations. It’s popular for its direct path and familiarity, but you get a little less time for acclimatisation.
The “Whiskey Route” is a favourite for many trekkers due to its scenic variety and higher success rate. It’s moderately challenging but very rewarding.
Do you enjoy pristine remote landscapes? This is the route for you. The Lemosho Route begins on the western side and allows for excellent acclimatisation. Photographers and nature lovers are always thrilled with this route.
This is a quieter route from the northern side of the mountain. It’s less trafficked and typically drier, with gentle slopes and fewer crowds.
The steepest and most direct option. We love this climb, but it is definitely best suited for experienced trekkers who are comfortable with fast elevation gain.
This is the longest route on Kilimanjaro. You will circle around the north side, getting a breathtaking view of the dramatic scenery and benefitting from excellent acclimatisation.

The two best seasons to book Kilimanjaro climb tours are from January to March and from June to October. You will generally get the clearest skies and the best weather throughout these months, with less chance of rain or storms ruining the fun.
The trails are usually a little quieter from January to March. You will also experience colder temperatures at the summit, so this time of year is best suited for trekkers who appreciate a more solitary climb in the crisp alpine air.
June to October is the most popular trekking season. Trekkers who visit Kilimanjaro during these times will enjoy dry and sunny days with ideal hiking conditions throughout.
We recommend booking your trek several months in advance, no matter which time period you choose for your adventure. Kilimanjaro is a regulated park that has limited daily permits. This means that popular routes will fill up quickly in all seasons, so get in early to secure your spot.
You don’t need to be a professional mountaineer to take on Kilimanjaro, but you will still need to prepare physically to guarantee a safe and successful ascent.
Most of our guided Kilimanjaro climb routes cover long distances, and there will be some significant altitude gain. Because of this, we recommend that you start your fitness training at least 8 to 12 weeks before your trek.
Your training regime should focus on building up your cardiovascular endurance and your core strength. Here is what we recommend:
The biggest challenge you will face when climbing Kilimanjaro is the altitude, rather than the terrain (although the ground can be a little uneven).
Our suggestion to help you prepare is to practice slow and sustained hikes at higher elevations wherever you can. It is even more important to simulate the altitude experience with long hikes over multiple days if you live at sea level.
You’ll be walking 4 to 8 hours a day on uneven terrain and at altitude. The better your conditioning, the more you’ll enjoy the journey. But don’t worry, the Mauly team has all the guidance you need to prepare so you can arrive ready to reach the summit.
You will want to make sure that you have packed the right gear for any of our Kilimanjaro trekking tours.
Weather conditions and terrain change dramatically from the base to the summit, so layering up your clothing and wearing good boots is going to be key to staying comfortable. You can rent some gear locally, but it’s always better to bring well-fitted gear that you are comfortable with.
We will let you know all of the gear you will need when you book one of our tours, but here is a handy checklist of what you will need for most of our treks:
Gear | What We Recommend |
Clothing Layers | Waterproof jacket, thermal base layers, fleece or down jacket, insulated gloves, hat |
Footwear | Broken-in hiking boots, warm socks, camp shoes (optional) |
Sleeping Gear | Sub-zero rated sleeping bag, sleeping mat (usually provided) |
Accessories | Trekking poles, headlamp with spare batteries, sunglasses |
Backpacks | Daypack (20–30L), large duffel or backpack for porter carry |
Hydration | Water bottles or hydration bladder (minimum 3 liters total) |
Toiletries & Health | Sunscreen, lip balm, wet wipes, personal medications |
Optional Rentals | Sleeping bags, poles, boots (rental options available through Mauly) |

Most of the tours we offer are non-technical, although they will still be physically demanding. Remember that you will be trekking for up to 8 hours a day at higher altitudes. Beginners will fare best if they train well beforehand and choose a longer route that allows them to acclimate at a slower pace.
Success rates vary on Kilimanjaro. Shorter, steeper climbs are harder and have lower success rates. Longer routes like Lemosho or the Northern Circuit, with experienced guides, can see up to 90% of climbers succeed.
Most Kilimanjaro Trekking Tours last 6 to 9 days. Shorter routes are quicker but offer less time to adjust. Longer treks help to improve your acclimatisation and make it more likely that you will reach the summit.
Aim to book the Kilimanjaro climb packages 3 to 6 months in advance. The best trekking seasons are January to March and June to October for the best weather and views
Start your training at least 2–3 months before your trek and practise with all of your gear. Go on long walks and do plenty of cardio training and stair climbing.
