Itinerary for the Umbwe Route

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Day 2: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

Drive from Moshi to Umbwe Gate (1-2 hours). Begin your trek through dense rainforest, following a steep ascent to Umbwe Cave Camp, situated at an elevation of 2,850 meters. The hike covers 11 kilometers and takes approximately 5-7 hours. Enjoy the lush scenery and wildlife along the way.

Day 3: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

Continue the steep climb through the forest and into the moorland zone. Reach Barranco Camp at 3,900 meters, located in a valley below the Barranco Wall. This trek covers 6 kilometers and takes 4-5 hours, providing a dramatic change in scenery.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Climb the Barranco Wall, a challenging but non-technical ascent. Traverse over ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, situated at 4,200 meters. The trek covers 5 kilometers and takes 4-5 hours. This shorter day helps with acclimatization.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Ascend gradually to Barafu Camp, located at 4,600 meters. Arrive in the early afternoon, allowing time for rest and preparation for the summit attempt. This trek covers 4 kilometers and takes 4-5 hours. An early dinner is followed by rest to prepare for the final push to the summit.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Begin the summit attempt at midnight. Hike to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), arriving at sunrise. After celebrating and taking photos, descend to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp, situated at 3,100 meters. The ascent takes 7-8 hours, and the descent covers 12 kilometers, taking 4-6 hours.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Descend from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, located at 1,640 meters. The final descent covers 10 kilometers and takes 3-4 hours. Collect your summit certificates and transfer back to Moshi for a celebration dinner and relaxation.

Day 8: Departure

Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time to explore Moshi or relax. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
