Top Questions

Kilimanjaro FAQs

What is a Kilimanjaro group climb?

A group climb is an open expedition where individual travelers join together on a set itinerary. It’s ideal for solo travelers, couples, or small groups looking to share the experience, reduce costs, and enjoy the camaraderie of hiking with like-minded people from around the world.

How many people are in each group?

Our group climbs typically host 4–12 climbers. During high season, larger bookings may be split into smaller sub-groups for a more comfortable and personalized experience. We carefully manage group sizes to ensure safety, guide attention, and a better overall trekking environment for every participant.

Will the group climb happen if I’m alone?

Yes. All our listed group departures are guaranteed, meaning we will never cancel your climb due to low numbers. Even if you’re the only participant, our team will proceed with the expedition as scheduled, ensuring your travel plans remain secure and uninterrupted.

Can I join as a solo traveler?

Absolutely! Many of our clients are solo travelers. There’s no single supplement fee, and we’ll pair you with a same-gender tentmate and hotel roommate (unless you prefer to upgrade to private accommodation). You’ll quickly find yourself in great company on the trail.

What if I don’t have proper trekking gear?

No worries! We offer affordable gear rental including jackets, boots, sleeping bags, poles, and more. All items are sanitized and high quality, so you don’t need to invest in expensive gear before your trip. A detailed packing list is also provided before arrival.

Are the guides and porters trained professionals?

Yes, all Mauly Tours guides are certified, experienced, and first-aid trained. Porters and chefs are also highly skilled. We follow strict safety protocols, conduct daily health checks, and use pulse oximeters to monitor your acclimatization throughout the trek for maximum safety.

What routes are used for group climbs?

We offer scheduled group climbs on popular routes like Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, and more. These are chosen for their scenic beauty, good acclimatization profiles, and overall success rates. You can pick your preferred route from our departure list on the website.

Is altitude sickness common on Kilimanjaro?

Altitude affects everyone differently, but we help you acclimatize properly with gradual climbs and careful pacing. Our team monitors your health daily, and oxygen is available if needed. Choosing longer routes like Lemosho or Machame improves your chances of adjusting safely.

What’s included in the group climb package?

Group packages include airport transfers, hotel stays before and after the climb, park fees, tents or huts, full-board meals on the mountain, guides, porters, and all logistics. You’ll also get a pre-trek briefing, safety checks, and 24/7 support from our local team.

How do I book a group climb with Mauly Tours?

It’s simple. Choose your route and dates from our scheduled departures, then pay a small deposit to secure your spot. We’ll send you all the prep details including gear lists and training tips. The rest of the payment is made on arrival in Tanzania.
