Itinerary for the Machame Route

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Enjoy a pre-trek briefing with your guide, check your equipment, and prepare for the trek ahead. Your stay includes dinner at Parkview Inn or a similar hotel.

Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate for registration and begin your trek through the lush rainforest to Machame Camp. This 11km (7 miles) trek takes approximately 5-7 hours. Enjoy your first night at Machame Camp with all meals provided.

Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Trek through the heather and moorland zone to Shira Camp, covering 5km (3 miles) in 4-6 hours. Enjoy panoramic views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. Overnight at Shira Camp with all meals included.

Day 4: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Hike to Lava Tower for acclimatization and lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp. This 10km (6 miles) trek involves 6-8 hours of trekking through semi-desert terrain. Spend the night at Barranco Camp with all meals provided.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Climb the Great Barranco Wall and trek through the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp. This 5km (3 miles) trek takes 4-5 hours. Overnight at Karanga Camp with all meals included.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Hike to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit. This 4km (2.5 miles) trek takes 4-5 hours through alpine desert conditions. Rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Overnight at Barafu Camp with all meals provided.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Start your summit attempt at midnight, reaching Gilman’s Point and continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest and then continue to Mweka Camp. This trek covers 5km (3.1 miles) for the ascent and 12km (7.5 miles) for the descent, with a total trekking time of 6-8 hours ascent and 5-7 hours descent. Overnight at Mweka Camp with all meals included.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, covering 10km (6 miles) in 3-4 hours. Collect your summit certificates and transfer back to Moshi. Enjoy a day room at Parkview Inn or a similar hotel to freshen up. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 9: Departure

Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight, with breakfast included.
