Northern Circuit

Serengeti

The world's best known wildlife sanctuary, the Serengeti has no low season and is a must-see park. During the annual migration the Serengeti is filled with over a million wildebeest and zebra and the predators stalking them through the tall grass.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is hard to beat for its beautiful scenery, its animal densities and its wildlife watching opportunities. The crater, a UNSESCO World Heritage site, hosts an astounding amount of wildlife on the open grasslands of the crater floor.

Lake Manyara

The ark's centrepiece is the lake. It shimmers pink in the distance with thousands of flamingos and attracts an amazing variety of other birds as well. Lake Manyara is also home to the famous tree-climbing lions.

Tarangire

Ancientness surrounds you in Tarangire. Centuries-old baobabs, with their massive trunks and gnarled branches, are one of the park's hallmarks. Elephants follow age-old migration routes through Tarangire in enormous numbers.

Mkomazi

Tucked away in the shadow of Mt Kilimanjaro is arid Mkomazi which plays a vital role in the Tsavo ecosystem. After the rains it comes alive with colour and birdlife is abundant.

Southern Circuit

Selous

Selous is vast in size and outstanding for its wildlife. The centre point of safaris here is the Rufiji River which is filled with hippos and crocodiles and frequented by elephants and 400-plus bird species. 

Mikumi

Mikumi, bisected by Tanzania's main southern highway, makes and easy-to-access stop. The mountains make a lovely backdrop to the wildlife-rich floodplains, grasslands and woodlands.

Ruaha

Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park as well as one of its most remote. Among Ruaha's wildlife are African wild dogs, roan and sable antelopes and one of the continent's largest elephant populations.
The southern circuit is notable for its markedly wilder and untrammelled surroundings. Several animal species can only be found here in the south. Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar are the best starting and finishing points.

Kilimanjaro

There are six official routes to Uhuru, the peak of Kilimanjaro. Each offers a different level if difficulty and each is a totally unique experience. These routes are the Machame route, Lemosho route, Rongai route, Shora route, Umbwe route and the Marangu route.

Western Circuit

Gombe

Chimpanzees are the highlight at Gombe. Made famous by primatologist Jane Goodall's research, several groups of Gombe's chimpanzees are habituated to human presence.

Katavi

Visiting Katavi is like stepping back into Africa of several millennia ago. In the late dry season thousands-strong buffalo herds trammel the plains and massive pods of hippos jostle for space.

Mahale

Chimpanzees are the main draw in Mahale, together with the backdrop of forested mountains rising up from Lake Tanganyika's clear waters.

The Coast

Zanzibar

For centuries, monsoon winds have carried traders between Zanzibar, Arabia and Asia.

In Stone Town, on the archipelago's main island of Zanzibar, the narrow, cobbled streets are filled with the scents of spice. The island's east coast is fringed by kilometre after kilometre if beach with with sands and turquoise waters.

Mafia

Mafia's highlights are its attractive lodges, its diving and its tranquility. Whale sharks are another attraction at Mafia Island. Days are spent snorkelling, relaxing or exploring some of the smaller islands.

Pangani

Along the coast north and south of Pangani are kilometres of picturesque beaches, with laidback lodges nestled amidst the palm trees and and lively fishing villages on the sands. At dawn each day, dhows sail into the sunrise, while at night, small fishing boat lanterns glimmer offshore.
